Cecil - một Dark Knight chỉ huy hạm đội tàu bay Red Wings- được vua của xứ Baron giao nhiệm vụ làm cỏ một ngôi làng của những người dân lương thiện , nhằm tịch thu Water Crytal. Cecil đã dằn vặt về hành động này. Nội dung trò chơi chính là bước đường của Cecil nhằm khám phá những bí mật to lớn , ảnh hưởng tới sự an nguy của thế giới.

Cuộc chiến tranh Magi đã đẩy loài người vào tình trạng hỗn loạn và đưa cả hành tinh trở thành một hoang mạc khô cằn và không có sức sống. Một bộ áo giáp khi mặc vào sẽ có được một sức mạnh kinh khủng và khả năng phép thuật sẽ tăng mạnh. Kefka đã bắt Terra - một cô gái bí ẩn có thể là một trong những người có khả năng sử dụng phép thuật còn sót lại. Hắn sử dụng cái vòng trên đầu Terra để khống chế và bắt Terra vâng lệnh của mình. Một lần khi nghe tin một Esper được tìm thấy ở Narshe, hắn đưa Terra cùng Biggs và Wedge, hai người lính Magitek khác đến điều tra. Một trận đánh với Esper huyền thoại đã giết chết Wedge và Biggs, còn Terra thì bị ngất đi. Cô được một ông lão ở Narshe cứu sống và vô tình tháo chiếc vòng đội đầu ra. Terra thoát khỏi sự kiểm soát của Kefka, nhưng dường như trí nhớ của cô về thân phận của mình vẫn chưa được sáng tỏ. Đó là lúc cuộc hành trình của cô và đồng đội bắt đầu.

Squall Leonhart là một học viên quân sự Balamb Garden. Sau khi hoàn thành tốt một nhiệm vụ, Squall cùng ba học viên khác tốt nghiệp ở học viện Balamb và được vinh dự trở thành một SeeD – là những lính đánh thuê đặc nhiệm. Squall cùng hai SeeD là Zell và Selphie lên đường thực hiện nhiệm vụ đầu tiên. Họ được Rinoa thuê để giúp đỡ nhóm người nổi loạn bắt cóc Tổng thống Deling của Galbadia - người sắp công bố về một khối liên minh mới sẽ đem lại cho Galbadia danh tiếng và thành công vượt qua mọi đối thủ. Câu chuyện mở đầu bằng một âm mưu bắt cóc công chúa Garnet. Vụ bắt cóc thậm chí xảy ra dễ dàng do chính công chúa tự nguyện.Thế là cuộc phiêu lưu giữa công chúa Garnet với tên trộm Zidane bắt đầu. Lại sẽ có những bí mật chờ đợi người chơi khám phá.

Just watched it then. It is pretty damn awesome. The fights are fantastic and the magic is really cool! It's totally like a video-game in parts, with some amazing hand-to-hand combat in there.
This film is for the fans: "To those who loved this world once before and spent time with its friends, gather again and devote your time..." Besides this ominous opening, the story was not very hard to follow, and Ihave never played a Final Fantasy game. I think it pays to be familiar with Role Playing Games in general; knowledge of the genre kinda helps you grasp some of it better. I think though that if you pay attention, and accept what the film throws at you, it's quite easy to understand. There is a lot that isn't explicitly explained, and if you demand that it should be then you will probably be confused and irritated.
